City of Markham

Committed to enhancing the quality of life of residents, workers, students and visitors, the City of Markham is interested in testing and demonstrating both hardware and software solutions.

Located in the heart of Canada’s innovation community, Markham Centre is a vibrant 243-acre urban centre immersed with more than $25 million of thought-provoking public art, connected to public transit and major roadways, adjacent to North America’s largest urban park, with 72 acres of landscaped green space and a unique mix of amenities. Markham Centre is powered by district energy, reducing community emissions by 50%, and features the Markham Pan Am Centre, Unionville GO Station, and will be home to York University’s new Markham Centre campus, opening in 2024.

Markham is home to over 440 technology companies, including major automotive players like GM Canada, Honda, Hyundai, and Tesla. Markham's thriving automotive sector is at the forefront of the electric vehicle transition and next-generation mobility technologies.

 

City of Vaughan

The automotive sector in the City of Vaughan makes up a large part of the advanced manufacturing cluster in the city, contributing $4 billion in real gross domestic product to Vaughan’s economy in 2022.

Automotive manufacturers in Vaughan are playing a pivotal role in automotive innovation – including through support for Project Arrow, Canada’s first original, full-build, zero-emissions concept vehicle. Major automotive companies from Vaughan, including Arcelor Mittal, Martinrea International, Woodbridge Group and Pfaff Autoworks, made significant contributions to the project.​

The next generation of automotive solutions is emerging in Vaughan. Our city is home to many globally-recognized tier-one suppliers, including Magna International, Martinrea, Multimatic, and Hanon Systems, as well as numerous tier-two and tier-three suppliers. Vaughan’s auto tech sector is driving innovation for automotive giants such as Stellantis, Ford, Honda and Toyota, and is a destination of choice for emerging leaders like Rivian, Tesla and VinFast.​

Markham provides a fertile environment for collaborations supported by a robust network of accelerator resources including ventureLAB, YSpace and Seneca Helix.

Markham is home to a satellite campus of York University, attracting over 4,000+ students gradually growing to 10,000. This academic presence not only adds to the city's dynamic energy but also provides a valuable pool of next generation users.

The City of Markham has made considerable progress in digital service delivery, digital citizen engagement, and using innovative digital technologies to drive efficiencies in the mobile workforce, and connecting its residents. Major city-building projects like Vaughan’s emerging downtown – the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre – and Canada’s first smart hospital – the Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital, as well as the 900-acre North Maple Regional Park which continue to generate momentum and excitement.​

Through the OVIN Demonstration Zone, City of Vaughan is looking to demonstrate innovative and/or emerging technologies that align with our transportation and mobility objectives.​

Demonstrations are open for the entire City of Vaughan and may include areas such as:

Vaughan Metropolitan Centre (VMC) is Vaughan’s emerging downtown, poised to be the financial, innovation and cultural center of the city​

North Maple Regional Park (NMRP), a signature park and a world-class recreation and cultural destination. ​

City-operated properties, facilities and buildings including Vaughan City Hall, parking lots, community centers, fire stations, libraries etc

Vaughan is a Smart City leader that seeks new and meaningful ways to incorporate innovative solutions into city-building efforts and drive economic growth.

The City of Vaughan is a rapidly urbanizing city and recognizes the transformative power of becoming a Smart City, utilizing data and technology to drive positive impacts on social, economic, and environmental outcomes for its entire community.

Vaughan’s Information & Communications Technology (ICT) sector is home to over 1,200 companies and employs more than 6,400 people. As technology continues to evolve, a robust ICT sector not only positions the City at the forefront of global competitiveness but also contributes to the development of a skilled workforce.

In recent years, the City of Vaughan has gained recognition for its Smart City efforts. Selected awards and certifications include: Smart Cities Early Adopter International Organization of Standardization (ISO) 37122 certifications from the World Council on City Data;   Activate!Vaughan Smart City Challenge won a Gold Award from the Economic Development Council of Ontario (EDCO) in 2022; Two-time recipient of the 2021 Smart50 Awards for the Winter Maintenance Artificial Intelligence System and the LED Streetlight Retrofit Program; and  The Smart Cities Road Patrol Solution received the 2023 Peter J. Marshall Municipal Innovation Award and Project of the Year Award from the Ontario Public Works Association (OPWA)
