Solar-Power Parking Detection
The demonstration aims to address issues related to parking demand at on-street locations. It will provide evidence of the technology’s effectiveness in managing parking in mixed residential and retail areas, and data will be collected as a study to measure parking demand and for future infrastructure& policy planning. This parking study will provide real-time data on road-user behaviours and usage patterns to provide the City’s insights on demand and safety.
The MPS SolarStick is a solar-powered, bollard-looking hardware device.
NOTE: No parking violations or citations will be issued.
Purpose:
Parking Study for camera detection and software to remotely monitor parking violations to be tested in no parking zone at schools to enhance public safety.
Expected Outcomes:
- Enhanced compliance with parking regulations
- Data-driven insights to inform future urban or transportation planning, and parking policy decisions

Expected outcomes include reduced congestion caused by drivers searching for parking, enhanced compliance with parking regulations, and data-driven insights to inform future urban or transportation planning and parking policy decisions from the City.
The demonstration should provide evidence of the effectiveness of detection technology to help manage parking in mixed residential and commercial areas.
The data collected will be used to monitor the behaviours in the observed parking or no-parking areas, provide analysis to inform on future planning, and improve the efficiency and safety of the city.
The camera technology mainly collects data related to parking availability and compliance, such as a vehicle's presence in a parking spot and its duration.
The camera technology monitors parking spaces in real-time, detecting whether a spot is occupied or vacant - and what the capacity is of the parking areas. It uses sensors to determine if a spot is occupied, tracks the duration of parking activities, and evaluates compliance with existing parking regulations.
No parking violations or citations will be issued from the captured data during the demonstration
This parking study will provide real-time data on road-user (driver) behaviours, parking availability and usage patterns to provide the City’s insights on demand and safety insights.
The capture system will be carefully managed to ensure that it does not interfere with pedestrian safety. The cameras will be installed facing the roadway and can only capture within their field of view. The data collected focuses on behaviours rather than tracking individuals.
The records of the detected images will be monitored and if sensitive information is captured by the camera, it will be removed from the records for the demonstration.
