Reporting & Proactive Traffic Analysis
The City of Vaughan continues to make road safety, active and sustainable travel modes and effective traffic management a top priority. As part of Vaughan’s MoveSmart Mobility Management Strategy (MoveSmart), the City is improving safety management and efficiency through innovation and technology.
With thousands of businesses and more than 344,000 residents, Vaughan is one of Ontario’s fastest-growing municipalities. Through this demonstration, the City will assess AirMatrix's advanced traffic monitoring system and AI-powered analysis to gather real-time traffic data to demonstrate how it can inform future development decisions to keep up with increased travel demand.
The demonstration will temporarily pilot a drone to capture traffic data, and use AirMatrix' AI-powered analysis software to monitor traffic patterns and behaviours. The drone will be mounted on a camera, and will be temporarily installed at a major intersection for a traffic study to evaluate the solution’s effectiveness in managing traffic gridlock and congestion, improving traffic flow, enhancing safety, and providing actionable insights for better traffic management.
Purpose:
This demonstration will focus on three key areas of assessment:
- Traffic Study: To observe the impact of traffic queues on the test site from peak traffic times.
- Collision and Disruption Data Collection: This would provide real-time data during road collisions or disruptions, addressing the current lack of data collection methods.
- Impact Assessment: This involves assessing the effects, such as construction traffic on congestion and safety, or behaviours at train crossings.
Expected Outcomes:
- Insights into traffic impacts due to different disruptions
- Evaluate how smart technologies can potentially enhance traffic studies
- Measure potential reduction in staff resources
Company Description:
AirMatrix is a software innovator specializing in AI-driven Command & Control (C2) solutions. We unify diverse sensor data, automate workflows, and provide actionable insights for critical infrastructures. Our technology seamlessly integrates with legacy systems, allowing organizations to harness real-time intelligence without costly hardware replacements.
About Smart Traffic & Planning Innovations
AirMatrix uses a camera feed to monitor traffic patterns and behaviours and analyzes the data through an AI-powered software platform. The demonstration will use a drone to provide real-time aerial views of traffic flow and incidents along the roadway. The AI analyzes this data to predict future conditions to improve traffic management, reduce congestion and enhance safety, and can issue immediate alerts for incident reporting.
The demonstration uses a drone camera in an aerial position which may capture pedestrians and road users within the demonstration area. If any personal data collected during the demonstration, the data will be anonymized. No personal data will be stored. The data collected in the demonstration will be for a study on traffic behaviours to understand current traffic activity and to help inform future planning.
The technology collects data related to traffic behaviours, such the number length and duration in the queue of vehicles at the intersection (Ex. Observing turning lanes or at red lights) travel time or incidents within the demonstrating area.
The purpose of this demonstration is two-fold:
(1) To assess traffic operations by capturing aggregate traffic data and behaviors, such as travel patterns, near-miss incidents, counting road users (like e-scooters or e-bikes), and analyze the queue lengths during rush hour time or the impact of a railway crossing.
(2) To assess the accuracy of AirMatrix’s software technology. This information will be used for traffic safety analysis and to inform the City's transportation planning and management strategies. The data collected will help identify potential safety risks and improve road conditions for all users.
AirMatrix technology can enhance planning in the city through several key features, including real-time traffic monitoring, data-driven insights, impact assessment, and enhanced situational awareness.
By leveraging these capabilities, AirMatrix could provide city planners with the tools needed to manage traffic by receiving real-time alerts to manage incidents and analytics which can benefit the management of traffic obstructions like congestion and incidents, provide insights safety studies, and contribute to future transportation planning.
The data will be used to analyze traffic patterns, improve traffic planning, and enhance safety measures in road networks.
