Smart Traffic System

As part of Vaughan’s MoveSmart Mobility Management Strategy (MoveSmart), the City is improving safety management and efficiency through innovation and technology. The Mobility Management Program, a key initiative under MoveSmart, aims to improve efficiency through innovation and technology by modernizing traffic signals at intersections - to provide more efficient traffic flow and links to existing and future technology. The intersection of Millway Ave and Apple Mill Rd was selected for this demonstration as it allows the City to continue to monitor and address traffic congestion, traffic circulation, truck traffic movements, operating speeds, pedestrian and cycling safety and on-street curbside activity at a location that has a modern traffic signal system.

Within the OVIN Demonstration Zone program, the City will evaluate emerging technologies on their effectiveness in managing traffic gridlock and congestion. The demonstration will utilize NoTraffic’s mobility management platform - a smart mobility management system or Intelligent Traffic System at signalized (modern) intersections. The platform incorporates sensor detection technology, control units, and AI-powered analysis to monitor traffic patterns and behaviours. Four (4) sensor units and a one (1) control unit will be temporarily installed at the intersection to assess traffic operations at the intersection.

Purpose:

The purpose of this demonstration is to use AI-driven analysis tools to measure object detection, travel patterns and traffic operations for pedestrians, cyclists, and transit and vehicular road users at the modernized intersection of Millway Ave and Apple Mill Rd.

Analysis tools with sensors will detect and classify traffic behaviours and other insights on traffic safety data. Once this demonstration is completed, the data and insights will enable City staff to develop and implement recommendations on smart technology to support pre-analysis and post-analysis of traffic calming and traffic safety plans, as well as provide data for traffic and safety management.

Expected Outcomes:
  • Measure accuracy in the detection of travel patterns of cyclists and transit and vehicular road users

  • Pedestrian crossing times

  • Measurements for emergency vehicle operations

  • Evaluation of red-light running occurrences and other data for safety management

  • Support for safety and traffic calming strategies in traffic management at this location

Data from this study will help classify traffic and safety conditions at this location and provide evidence to help improve traffic safety and efficiency for residents.

About Traffic Safety Innovations

Innovative Traffic Solutions Inc will use a connected hardware and AI software smart traffic management solution for real-time data and analytics to optimize traffic flow, and traffic and safety management at intersections. Their smart mobility platform uses smart sensors and artificial intelligence to monitor traffic operations at an intersection and classify the detected activities.

The IoT sensor units will be installed temporarily at the Millway and Apple Mill Way intersection to provide road-user detection and classification. The AI-powered software platform analyzes the data and provides insights on observed behaviours such as vehicle counts, emergency vehicle behaviours, and other safety features to support traffic management.

By leveraging innovative technology to collect mobility data and insights, the City can continue to improve mobility management and classify traffic safety operations more accurately for pedestrians, cyclists, and transit and vehicular road users and better serve all modes of transportation. Through the analysis of factors such as intersection management operations and traffic behaviours such as red-light running and emergency vehicle activities, the City can identify potential safety risks for pre- and post-traffic calming and safety management plans. The data and insights gathered from this demonstration will enable City staff to make recommendations on short and long-term implementation plans to address any specific interests identified in these areas.

The data will be used to analyze traffic patterns, improve traffic signal timing, and enhance safety measures at intersections.

The expected outcomes of the demonstration include providing the City with accurate counts of various road users, vehicle speeds, and red-light running incidents, along with detailed measurements of traffic behaviors at the intersection. The findings will support the City of Vaughan's ongoing Mobility Management Program, help shape recommendations for improving road safety and provide insights on traffic calming measures at the intersection of Millway Ave and Apple Mill Road.

The purpose of this demonstration is two-fold: (1) To assess traffic operations by capturing aggregate data related to traffic patterns and behaviors, such as vehicle counts, travel patterns of cyclists and transit and vehicular road users, and red-light running; (2) to determine the accuracy of smart sensor technology to detect and classify activities at a modernized intersection. This information will be used solely for traffic safety analysis and to inform the City's transportation planning and management strategies. The data collected will help identify potential safety risks and improve road conditions for all users.
