AI Traffic Safety Intervention
As part of City's of Vaughan's MoveSmart Mobility Management Strategy, the City is undertaking In-Service Road Safety and Corridor Operational Reviews (Corridor Reviews) in the Martin Grove Road area. This area was selected based on the City’s commitment to continue to monitor and address traffic congestion, traffic circulation, truck traffic movements, operating speeds, pedestrian and cycling safety and on-street curbside activity. It was also selected considering the high population of older adults and vulnerable road users.
Within the OVIN Demonstration Zone program, the City will evaluate emerging technologies on their effectiveness in supporting the Corridor Review. The demonstration will utilize Msafe's Solutions Urban AI technology, incorporating camera detection and AI-powered analysis to monitor travel patterns and behaviors at the intersection. The demonstration will utilize the Urban AI technology, incorporating camera detection and AI-powered analysis to monitor travel patterns and behaviors at the intersection. Two telescopic cameras will be temporarily installed to assess traffic operations in the area.
Purpose:
The purpose of this demonstration is to use AI-driven analysis tools to measure travel patterns and traffic operations for pedestrians, cyclists, and transit and vehicular road users at the Martin Grove Rd and Woodbridge Ave intersection. MSafe’s Urban AI solution will also perform a post-analysis of footage to provide insights such as vehicle speed, turn speed, traffic safety data to the City. Once this demonstration is completed, the data and insights will enable City staff to develop and implement recommendations along Martin Grove Road.
Expected Outcomes:
Micromobility & vehicle type count
Pedestrian crossing times
Evaluation of near-miss occurrences, and other data for a safety analysis
Support for the City’s Corridor Review study at this location

About Traffic Safety Innovations
Msafe’s Urban AI technology uses cameras and artificial intelligence to monitor traffic operations at an intersection. The AI-powered system analyzes the data and provides insights such as vehicle speed, turning counts, pedestrian crossing times and other safety related data. Through this demonstration, the City will also test the software's capability on capturing near-miss incidents and provide these insights to enable City staff to make recommendations on short and long-term implementation plans to address any specific interests identified in these areas.
By leveraging innovative technology to assess traffic operations in this intersection, the City can continue to monitor and identify traffic safety measures for pedestrians, cyclists, and transit and vehicular road users to better serve all modes of transportation. Through the analysis of factors such as vehicle speeds, turning movements, pedestrian crossing behaviors, and near-miss incidents, the City can identify potential safety risks. The data and insights gathered from this demonstration will enable City staff to make recommendations on short and long-term implementation plans to address any specific interests identified in these areas.
The data will be used to analyze traffic patterns, improve traffic signal timing, and enhance safety measures at intersections.
The expected outcomes of the demonstration include providing the City with accurate counts of various road users, vehicle speeds, and near-miss incidents, along with detailed measurements of pedestrian crossing times and behaviors at the intersection. The findings will support the City of Vaughan's ongoing Corridor Review and help shape recommendations for improving road safety and traffic operations along Martin Grove Rd.
The purpose of this demonstration is to assess traffic operations by capturing aggregate data related to traffic patterns and behaviors, such as vehicle counts, speeds, and pedestrian crossing times. This information will be used solely for traffic safety analysis and to inform the City's transportation planning and management strategies. The data collected will help identify potential safety risks and improve road conditions for all users.
